Old Russian New Year: A MOFAD Holiday Party

Don’t want the holiday season to end? Travel via NYC Ferry to celebrate Old Russian New Year at MOFAD on January 19! Take NYC Ferry’s East River route to North Williamsburg to visit the Museum of Food and Drinks.

After the Russian Revolution, the Gregorian calendar was implemented in place of the old Julian calendar. The 1918 reform dropped thirteen days from the calendar, leaving the religious population in the middle of a 40-day fast on new New Year’s Eve. In order to still enjoy the holiday festivities, the community decided to celebrate New Year’s Eve according to the Julian calendar, after the winter fast.

Join MOFAD for this immersive culinary and cultural celebration. Prepare for multiple toasts, a historical workshop led by our very own Irina Groushevaia, and a celebratory Russian spread with caviar and vodka. Let MOFAD walk you through the customs of Russian celebrations and by the time it’s over you can throw your own Russian fête, like a real Siberian Oligarch.
